Four Studies of a Dog

Four studies of a black, white and tan dog are painted in oil on a brownish ground. Three show the animal seated, sitting or curled up in varied poses, while one shows it lying with its head on its paws. Loose, quick brushwork gives the figures a sketch-like immediacy, and a signature with the date 1868 appears at lower right.
