A bald, bearded old man kneels in a grey robe on a dark floor, hands clasped in prayer and a faint halo above his head. Beside him a draped table holds books, candlesticks and a small devotional object, under a rich red curtain and a patterned carpet, in warm, shadowed oil painting.
