Pietà (Vesperbild), German polychrome wood sculpture, c. 1375–1400
A carved and painted wooden sculpture shows a seated woman in a blue mantle with gilded trim cradling the body of a thin, nude man across her lap. The figure's head tilts back and his limbs hang loosely, while her head is bowed over him. The painted surfaces retain blue, red and gold tones on a circular red base.
