Stipple engraving of a sleeping young woman in bed while a grimacing dark demon crouches on her chest beneath a draped canopy.

The Nightmare (Cauchemar): Sleeping Woman and Demon, Stipple Engraving, 1810

A young woman lies asleep in a bed beneath a draped canopy, her head tilted back and face tense, with a small dark crouching creature perched on her chest. The creature has a grimacing, wide-eyed face and clawed hands, and the fine dotted stipple technique gives the scene a soft, tonal finish. The caption "Cauchemar" appears beneath the image.
