Etching of a bearded man in a hat and draped cloak standing on a shadowed ground, with a pair of discarded shoes at his feet.

The Philosopher (Le Philosophe)

A bearded man in a tall hat stands frontward in a heavy, draped cloak, his gaze fixed on the viewer. Dense hatching fills the background and cloak, while his bare feet and a pair of shoes rest in the lower right. The etching and drypoint lines give the figure a worn, solitary presence.

Look closer: A pair of shoes lies on the ground at the lower right, near the figure's feet.
