Painting of a grimacing elderly man held by a figure in pink as an older woman holds a candle in a dark interior.

The Operation (Allegory of Touch)

A dim interior lit by a single candle shows an elderly man reclining with a grimacing face while a man in a pink tunic leans over him, touching his brow. An older woman in a white headcloth holds the candle close, and its warm glow sharpens the strong chiaroscuro of the oil painting.
