Charles Meryon in his madness, before removal to Charenton
A bearded man lies propped in an iron bed under a rumpled white sheet and checked blanket, gazing off to the side while a large dark shadow of a seated figure looms across the wall at left. Rendered in heavy crayon strokes on a textured ground, this 1858 heliogravure after Léopold Flameng is titled Charles Meryon in his madness.
