A Philosopher, Conduit Street: hand-coloured caricature after Gillray, 1796

A hand-coloured etching shows a stooped man in a dark coat leaning over a green-draped table crowded with glass vessels, a candle, a globe, and small instruments. Above him hang two oval portrait medallions, a sheet of diagrams, and a coiled serpent, while a candle in a wire cage glows at centre.
