Man examining a flask at a window, oil painting by Willem Joseph Laquy, 1780

An elderly man in a blue-green robe trimmed with fur and a fur cap raises a glass flask toward the light, pointing upward with his other hand beside an open book. A red cushion, a jug and a shelf with objects fill the dim room under a painted arched frame.
